When we left the cafe and got to my car, my phone buzzed. It was Nanna.

“This is amazing,“ she said after I answered. “I‘ve got great news.”

“Really?” I asked.

“Yes. We decided to skip the shopping and go straight to the investigating.”

I tried to suppress my groan. “And you found out something?”

“Yes,” said Nanna. “I got some big news.”

“Which is what?” I asked.

“Absolutely nothing,” Nanna said, and laughed gleefully. “We’ve got nothing yet, which is a good thing. Right? Nothing means there might be something later.”

“Sure,” I said, trying to figure out the logic of that. “What have you been up to?”

“Stone said that we need to start with social media, that everything is online. So, we looked up Oz, and we tried to find things about him, but we couldn’t find out too much. We did find out his favorite beer though. So, Stone said we should go to a pub and check it out. We need to try his favorite beer to find out what kind of person he was, really get into his mindset, you know?”

“Uh-huh,” I said.

“Exactly,” said Nanna. “So, we’re here at a pub now, and we’re drinking his favorite beer. It’s pretty good, I gotta tell you. That man had decent taste in beer. So, we’re going to try some of his favorite beer, and then I might grab a bite to eat. It’s important to live how the suspect does, you know, and we might run into him too,” she added hopefully.

“Right,” I said. “So, beer, and then food, and then maybe some shopping?”

“Maybe,” said Nanna. “Maybe not. Investigating is so much more important, isn’t it?”

I murmured noncommittally and asked Nanna to pass the phone to Stone.

“Hey, babe,” he said.

“Hey,” I said. “So, you’re drinking beer with Nanna in a pub in the morning?”

I could feel Stone grinning on the other end. “Yep.”

“Sounds like a fun way to start the day.”

“Sure,” he said.

“Not as good as shopping for camping gear, though.”

“Maybe not,” Stone admitted. “But Nanna was insistent that we needed to investigate.”

“I guess drinking beer is a good way to start,” I agreed. It was definitely a good way to keep Nanna out of trouble. But how long would that last?

“So, you’re at the pub,” I went on. “And then you’re going to get something to eat? That’ll keep you two busy for some time. But then Nanna’s going to want to do some more investigating. She’ll probably want to try to talk to people and all that.”

“I’m doing my best, babe,” Stone said.

“I know you are,” I agreed. “It’s just that Nanna can be so enthusiastic sometimes. I mean, she’s great, and it’s nice that she’s enthusiastic, but I just don’t want her to get into any trouble. You know?”

“She won’t,” Stone assured me. “I’ll stay with her the whole time.”

Well, things couldn’t get any better than that. Stone was the best bodyguard anybody could have, and I knew that he really would do his best to keep Nanna out of trouble. Getting her drinking beer early in the morning was a good idea, come to think of it.
